COPE announced the launch of membership for selected universities and research institutes in May 2022. An initial group of universities and research institutes have joined as members and will help ensure that the dedicated resources provide the appropriate support and guidance that universities and research institutes need:
Aston University | Leiden University | Ohio State University | Ottawa Hospital Research Institute | Queensland University of Technology | The University of Hong Kong | University College London (UCL) | University of Calgary | University of Cambridge | University of Glasgow | University of Lodz
University and research institute members
COPE has designed new resources specifically for universities and research institutes in addition to all the benefits of COPE membership, such as confidential advice on individual ethical issues, Forum discussions, and free attendance at COPE events. Selecting an initial group of universities and research institutes for this new membership category will help to ensure that these resources provide the appropriate support and guidance that universities and research institutes need.
The new resources will include eLearning modules for research integrity officers or their equivalents. A training manual and accompanying slide deck will also support the eLearning modules and will allow research integrity officers to set up their own training programmes on the principles, responsibilities and importance of publication ethics for researchers.
Who is eligible for membership
This membership category is for universities and research institutes who:
- conduct and publish original research, and where the results are disseminated through standard scholarly channels
- encourage training in research ethics and research publication ethics
This membership category does not include university presses. University presses that publish peer reviewed journals should apply for publisher membership of COPE.

Why is COPE providing membership to universities and research institutes?
COPE brings together all those involved in scholarly research and its publication to strengthen the network of support, education and debate in publication ethics. COPE is uniquely placed to bring the two worlds of universities/research institutes and journals/publishers together, to help us solve the publication ethics problems we share, and promote integrity in research publishing better, fostering a culture of responsibility for the integrity of the literature. COPE, as the facilitator, can help to improve communication and collaboration between universities/research institutes and journals/publishers. Working more collaboratively will provide both universities/research institutes and editors/publishers with a better understanding of the complexities of the processes involved when investigating misconduct issues.
