Ethics Clinic: ethics of data sharing
Dr Trevor Lane, COPE Council member, was an invited panellist in the Ethics Clinic at the virtual 2021 Annual Meeting of the Council of Science Editors (CSE) on 5 May 2021. The Ethics Clinic is a regular feature of the CSE Annual Meeting and is jointly sponsored by the CSE Editorial Policy Committee and COPE. This year’s topic was the ethics of data sharing (see PDF).
After COPE’s brief presentation of data stewardship and responsible data sharing, the panellists presented and discussed a total of six interactive cases covering dilemmas in data sharing. The co-panellists in the session were Shelley Stall, Senior Director of Data Leadership at the American Geophysical Union, and Matthew Cannon, Head of Open Research at Taylor & Francis. Both are in the Research Data Publishing Ethics working group of FORCE11 (Future Of Research Communications and E-scholarship), which is collaborating with COPE to explore and develop guidance in ethical issues related to data publishing and sharing.
